Dog Breed Origins

This is a fascinating subject. It’s acknowledged that all dog breeds are the descendants of the wolf, but how in the world did so many different breeds ever develop?

Accidental mutation is what this is usually attributed to. But the Chihuahua and the Great Dane are so totally different this can be a little hard to believe. It’s thought that the first domestication of the dog occurred about 12,000 years ago.

Think about it. Human beings look about the same now as they did 12,000 years ago. The difference in the breeds has to have come about because of human intervention. It’s interesting to think about our Neolithic ancestors breeding a better hunter or a dog designed to carry packs.

Fun stuff to dream about!
