Many people don’t realize how loud thunder can be to a dog. Their hearing is so sensitive, that when that big boom in the sky startles you, your canine companion hears it like a bomb going off in the back yard! No wonder it makes them nervous.
It can help to make a secure place for them to hide when the summer storms threaten. If they feel like they’re protected in a den, they’re less apt to be terrified. Put a box behind a chair or create some other den-like environment for them. Some people suggest desensitizing your dog to the thunder by daily playing a recording of the noise, starting very quietly and gradually increasing the volume until it’s no longer so upsetting.
Giving your dog lots of affection for his bravery as the noise level increases couldn’t hurt, either!
