Even if your dog is a short haired one like a smooth coated dachshund, he still needs a nice brisk brushing at least once a week. Loose hair and dust will get caught in his coat and should be removed. If he’s shedding, it should be more often.
Longer haired dogs should be groomed at least twice as often. For all dogs, it’s important for you to start off brushing them as puppies. Maybe he’ll only sit still for a minute or two. That’s fine- just make it a “no big deal” procedure at a young age, and you’ll have no trouble brushing him as an adult.
