Dogs, like people, need to feel important and necessary. There’s nothing sadder to me than a pooch whose only job is keeping his owners warm in front of the TV at night. I’d even go so far as to say that “puppy neurosis” is due to a dog not being allowed to contribute to the family’s survival.
Ever seen a really bratty kid? Nine times out of ten, or even ten times out of ten that child has no job whatsoever. Nothing to be counted on for, nothing to be needed for. It’s a sad thing! All sentient beings need to feel important, and that includes dogs. Cats need not apply – I love them too, but they have a superiority complex already.
See if you can find what your dog’s instinctive purpose is. That shouldn’t be too hard if you have a purebred, but even the beloved mutt needs a reason to exist. At least have him bring in the paper every evening!
